Bessemer is a Birmingham suburb in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States eight miles west of Hoover. The population was 29,672 at the 2000, but by the 2005 U.S. Census estimates, the city had fallen to a population of 28,641. Bessemer is situated in the midst of the iron ore and limestone district of Alabama, in the southern part of Jones Valley (about 3 miles wide). Iron ore was mined on the hills on the city's southeast side, coal was (and still is) mined to the north and west, and limestone deposits were also nearby. All three ingredients were necessary for steelmaking, which led to the area becoming a major steel center from about 1890 through the twentieth century. Steel is no longer made within the city limits, but is still manufactured in its northern city Fairfield. Originally surveyed in 1887 and incorporated in 1889; Bessemer was the vision of industrialist Henry Fairchild DeBardeleben.

Birmingham Alabama - Population: 242,820
Birmingham has a strong-mayor variant mayor-council form of government, lead by a mayor and a nine-member city council. The current system replaced the previous city commission government in 1962 (primarily as a way to remove Commissioner of Public Safety Eugene "Bull" Connor from power).
By Alabama law, an issue before a city council must be approved by a two-thirds majority vote (Act No. 452, Ala. Acts 1955, as supplemented by Act No. 294, Ala. Acts 1965.). Executive powers are held entirely by the mayor's office. The current mayor of Birmingham is Bernard Kincaid, who was voted into office in 1999.
The Birmingham area is home to some of America's best schools. In 2005, the Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School in Irondale, an eastern suburb of Birmingham, was rated as the #1 high school in America by Newsweek, a national publication. Mountain Brook High School placed 250 on the list.

Vestavia Hills Alabama - Population: 24,476
Vestavia Hills is named for the 20 acre (hectare) estate of former Birmingham mayor George Ward which was situated on the crest of Shades Mountain on what is now the northern edge of the city. Ward's mansion at the Vestavia estate became a landmark in the area as soon as it was completed in 1925. The two and a half story house was patterned after the circular Temple of Vesta in Rome with dark pink sandstone walls encircled by twenty massive white Doric columns surmounted by a carved entablature. The extensive gardens, populated by statuary and peacocks, featured a smaller domed gazebo, which was patterned after the Temple of Sibyl in Tivoli.
After Ward's death the house, something of a tourist stop near the highway between Birmingham and Montgomery, was used as a tea-room and reception hall before being donated to Vestavia Hills Baptist Church. The church met in the temple structure for several years before demolishing it in 1971 to make way for a larger building.

Mountain Brook Alabama - Population: 20,604
Mountain Brook is a city in Jefferson County, Alabama . As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 20,604. Mountain Brook is a particularly affluent suburb of Birmingham, and was the 17th wealthiest city in the United States in 2002.
Mountain Brook was originally developed in 1929 by local developer Robert Jemison as an extensive residential subdivision. The plans, by Boston-based landscape architect Warren H. Manning called for estate-sized lots along winding scenic roads and denser commercial development centering on three "villages", called "English Village", "Mountain Brook Village" and "Crestline Village". Nature preserves on the adjacent slopes protected the area from urban encroachment and bridle paths created a recreational network within the development.
Mountain Brook is the hometown of Friends actress Courteney Cox.

Homewood Illinois - Population: 19,543
Homewood is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 19,543 at the 2000 census.
The village of Homewood is located in the south suburbs of Chicago. Although some of the southern suburbs have fallen victim to urban poverty and blight, due to gentrification in Chicago, Homewood and its neighboring community of Flossmoor have withstood these pressures and remain communities for the middle class and moderately wealthy, due to the strength and excellence of their educational systems.
Homewood sits on the edge of Lake Chicago, which was formed by a retreating glacier long before Lake Michigan. Of one the main east-west roads through the town, Ridge Road, got its name because it runs along what used to be the ridge of the lake. The area is rich in limestone deposits, and neighbors Thornton Quarry. In its begininng, the area featured excellent topsoil making it an appealing place for farmers to settle.

Hueytown Alabama - Population: 15,364
Churches often play a supportive role in this community. In recent years several have experienced dramatic changes. Although Garywood Assembly of God may be one of metro Birmingham's best-known churches, conducting many large-scale dramatic performances, campmeetings and revivals over the past quarter-century, it announced in 2004 it will move its facilities to nearby McCalla. However, explosive growth has caused necessary expansion to Union Hill Baptist Church in the Rock Creek area, and North Highlands Baptist Church which is moving into a new facility off 15th Street Road near the Virginia Mines subdivision.
Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, located in the heart of Hueytown, has played a historic role in the life of the community. The church's chimes can be heard throughout the central district, hearkening back to the traditions of small town life. Missions such as the Jesus Pantry help feed those who are hungry, while the Master's Craftsmen have built churches all over America.
