Milford separated from neighboring Amherst in 1794. Like most towns named Milford in the United States, its name comes from the fact that it grew around a mill built on a ford, in this case on the Souhegan River. Milford first grew to fame for its extensive granite quarries, which produced a stone that was used, among other things, to make the pillars for the Treasury building in Washington, D.C. - pillars that can still be seen on the American $10 bill. Its nickname is still "The Granite Town," although only one small quarry is in operation as of 2006 Like many New England riverside towns, it developed several thriving textile mills in the 19th century. Both those industries departed by World War II, but Milford remains the commercial and retail center for surrounding towns, known as the Souhegan Valley. Major employers included casting company Hitchiner Manufacturing Co. and metal cable manufacturer Hendrix Wire and Cable Inc.

2012 NH AAU Boys State Tournament - Event Recap

It is always best for teams from New Hampshire to get out of state, travel around and test themselves against top notch national competition to really get better. With that being said, state tournament weekend is annually a great weekend for New Hampshire basketball as you get all the top teams and players from the state in the same tournament which really helps to create interest and excitement around New Hampshire basketball.

Just like in 2011, the story this year was once again the dominance of the Bishop Elite program. In just their third year of existence, the Bishop took home championships in the 17U and 15U divisions. Also, their 14U team was runner-up and their 16U squad made the semi-finals. Here are the final scores from the 14U-17U title games, followed by a breakdown of the players who stood out this weekend in each class.

Chininis continues the tradition of Souhegan players going on to play at the collegiate level as the senior recently committed to attend and play football at Tufts University. This is an outstanding accomplishment, as Tufts is one of the premier academic institutions in the country. Chininis has been able to use his football ability and his 3.6 GPA as a vehicle to not only attend such a prestigious school but also to play in the highly competitive New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC).

"Chris Chininis was a difference maker on the football field" Souhegan head football coach Mike Beliveau told the NH Notebook. "Opponents had to game plan against his ability to return kicks and punts, as well as where he lined up on the field offensively. His speed and athletic play making ability as a receiver and free safety made our team that much better. At Tufts I foresee Chris becoming another weapon for their spread offensive attack as a slot receiver. I also think his abilities as a return specialist will also be utilized."

Chininis was a Division III all-state player for the Sabers, and helped lead the team to D-III state titles in 2009 and 2010. Here's what he had to say when we interviewed him following his commitment to Tufts.

Jeremy Leveille: Talk about being able to continue the tradition of Souhegan kids going on to play college football.
Chris Chininis: It feels awesome to be able to carry on the tradition here at Souhegan. We have seen so many different players here go on and play at the next level and become successful. After playing with guys who have gone on to play, it taught me what it takes to reach that next level. Coach Beliveau, honestly, has done everything and anything he can to further my career into college. He has been an incredible help though out the process and is so knowledgeable about recruiting, he was really able to help me with everything whether it is getting in contact with coaches or helping me make a decision. I am really thankful for all he has done for me through out the process and on the field.

JL: Talk about your game and where you get your speed from.
CC: I really try to rely on my speed as much as I can. I know that is a huge tool I have and that I need to utilize it as much as possible. During the off season I have always been involved in other sports, keeping me in shape and ready for the football season. I've tried to always focus on my legs, keeping them healthy and strong.

JL: Tufts had a down year last season going 0-8. How do you see things turning around?
CC: There is really just an overall feeling at Tufts right now that there is promise in the guys they have brought in. Though they had a rough season last year, the coaching staff and team has been working hard, putting in extra time to make sure that they improve on all sides of the ball. The coaches feel very confident in the guys and can see the improvements they have made in order to be more successful. I can really see at Tufts that the overall attitude has shifted and improved to be more competitive, and that they feel as though the guys they have in place now, and the new class coming in, will make Tufts football successful in the near future.

JL: What do you see your role being on the team at Tufts?
CC: Next year at Tufts I will play Slot receiver for them. I also will look to play a role on special teams in the punt and kick return games. But overall, I just want to compete with the guys on the team. I am really looking to try to make the team better by competing with the guys ahead of me to push them to be better as well.

JL: Thoughts on playing in the NESCAC?
CC: I am real excited to play in the NESCAC. Tufts has really presented me with a great opportunity to not only play football, but most importantly get an incredible education. I feel that the NESCAC is so unique in that way, that not only is the football incredibly competitive, but also to obtain an outstanding education. I've seen so many Souhegan players go on to play in the NESCAC so it will be fun to play my former teammates as well.

JL: Fondest memories from your football career at Souhegan?
CC: I would say a few of my fondest memories during my high school career would be of course playing a role in two State Championships. But also, i loved the overall atmosphere between the guys on the team and the coaches. They really made the past four years perfect. I would not have traded these guys, or this team, for the world.

JL: What do you plan on studying at Tufts?
CC: I'm still undecided with a major, however I am leaning toward economics.

Walker and LeBlanc were two of the top players in the NHIAA this past season, and will now get the opportunity to showcase their talents by playing in the most competitive prep school league in the country - the NEPSAC AAA. Both Bridgton and New Hampton are consistently two of the top programs in New England. By reclassifying (Walker is now in Class of 2013 and LeBlanc is 2014), both players also get an extra year of AAU ball. This spring/summer, Walker is playing with a very good Bishop Elite 17U team, while LeBlanc is running with a star-studded Mass Rivals squad that includes NBA prospect Noah Vonleh.

Walker led Portsmouth to the Division II state championship just last month, and was named D-II Player of the Year by the NHBCO. Walker moved to Portsmouth from Worcester, MA prior to the 2010-2011 season, and he has been a first team all-state player in D-II in each of the two years he's been in NH. Walker is a 5'10" point guard with exceptional quickness, athleticism and play making ability. He can hit the outside shot, take it all the way to the rim and also has a dangerous mid-range game. Walker is most effective in transition with his blazing speed and ability to lead or finish on the break. He's also a very good defender who anticipates and jumps the passing lanes well. Walker simply took over in the D-II title game in the win over Bedford, doing anything he wanted to on both ends of the floor. he was the most consistent player in the NHIAA this winter.

LeBlanc was an all-state player for Dover this past season as a junior. Dover beating Salem in the D-I preliminary round was the upset of the year in NH high school basketball, and LeBlanc had a game-high 22 points in that game for the Green Wave. LeBlanc is a 6'6" wing player with a lot of upside. For a player his size he is very agile and can also stroke the three ball as well as attack the rim off the dribble. The Rivals have a track record of turning tall, lanky kids with solid but raw skill sets into scholarship players and LeBlanc is the latest pupil of Coach Vin Pastore. Reclassifying gives LeBlanc an extra year to get in the weight room, fill out his frame and also to work on his defense. But there's no question he has a ton of upside with his size, athleticism and ability to shoot the basketball.

Cohen transferred to Tilton from Bishop Guertin following her sophomore year. She repeated her sophomore year at Tilton in 2010-2011, and helped lead the Rams to the NEPSAC Class C championship. She is only a junior now, so she gives Manhattan head coach John Olenowski an early commitment for the Class of 2013.

Cohen becomes the second player from New Hampshire for the Class of 2013 to commit to a Division I program, with the other being Katharine Fogarty who committed to Marist College over the winter. At Manhattan, Cohen will be conference rivals with Fogarty as well as former AAU teammate Madeleine Blais who will be a freshman at Marist this fall. The Manhattan Jaspers finished 18-15 this season, in Coach Olenowski's second season as the program's head coach.

"From the first showcase I worked with Alex, I knew she was someone I wanted as a member of my program" said Coach Brisson. "Her non-stop work ethic was enticing as a coach because that combined with her potential to improve meant she work around the clock to achieve her highest goals - and that she did. There were even times I had to ban her from extra workouts in the morning because she was starting to acquire some overuse soreness! But Alex's stubbornness, dedication and refusal to be less than the best has earned her the opportunity to play basketball at Division I level. Having coached her now for two years, she has shown tremendous improvement in her game and her attitude. She has put in the extra time and effort to get better defensively which combined with her already excelled offensive skill set makes her a valuable addition to any collegiate program. I believe this decision will only continue to fuel her into a successful summer and senior season at Tilton. It will allow her to play free without the pressure of having to perform for coaches and to gain interest.I could not be happier for Alex and told her the only way I could be happier is winning another NEPSAC Championship in her senior season!"

Cohen is a 5'9" two-guard who also has the ability to slide over and play the point. She is an excellent outside shooter off the catch or the dribble. She moves well without the basketball in order to set herself up for open looks from the mid-range area or beyond the arc. Cohen can shoot the lights out, can also hurt you off the dribble, she's effective leading or finishing on the break and is also an underrated passer and defender. Cohen is a hard worker, a fundamentally sound player and is a student of the game of basketball. She understands floor spacing, help side defense and all of the fine points of the game. I definitely wouldn't be surprised if she ended up coaching when her playing days were over.

Here is what Alex had to say when we interviewed her following her commitment to Manhattan.

Jeremy Leveille: Talk about your recruitment and what factors led you to choose Manhattan over the other schools you were considering.
Alex Cohen: I was looking for a school that would offer me excellent academics and competitive D1 Basketball. I have been visiting schools unofficially for a last two years whenever I can. When I visited the Manhattan campus the first time I loved it right away. It felt like home. I love NY and its a small campus in a big city, has a strong science program, and a competitive team - so it's the best of everything for me. They sent me a letter as soon as September 1st came, which was the first day allowed for contact by NCAA for 2013.

JL: At what point did you start to receive interest from Division I schools?
AC: I received a bunch of letters and emails on September 1st this year from D1 schools. I was playing with older girls my first year with the Rivals and that July Live Period when I was a sophomore was crazy. So many coaches came to see our team play in Kentucky at Run for the Roses, and Tennessee for Battle in the Boro. I think that a lot of the interest I got was from my exposure early in my sophomore year from that July Live Period.

JL: What do you attribute your uncanny work ethic to?
AC: My work ethic is just part of me - my parents raised my brother and I to do something 150% or don’t do it at all. My parents put me in all sorts of things from the moment I could walk. I did karate, soccer, tee-ball, gymnastics, dance. Basketball was just what stuck. I fell in love with it right away. I just wanted to learn and be the best I could be at it.

JL: What do you see your role being on the team at Manhattan?
AC: My role on the team will be whatever they ask of me. I am a combo guard and they were looking for a 2 guard, but whatever the coaches need from me is what I will do. I have not practiced with the team but I have met them multiple times. The team is great, the coaches are great and I am very excited - the atmosphere at Manhattan is awesome.

JL: Talk about your decision to transfer from BG to Tilton, and how that move and playing for Coach Brisson helped with your development as a player and your recruitment.
AC: I loved BG but I transferred to Tilton so that I could take my game to the next Level. At Tilton you play all over New England, not just in New Hampshire. The exposure is greater. The competition is greater. These are all factors that help improve a player. Tilton also offers things that BG didn’t, because it’s a boarding school it's more like college. I have the gym available to me at all times, the training schedule and practices are more intense, we have our own scrimmage squad and we also have the opportunity to train with the boys team in the off-season and play pick up with the boys team. All these things provide a much more intense atmosphere than NHIAA schools are able to do. Playing for Coach Brisson is great. She is very intense, competitive and pushes me to be better. She believes in her players and is always available for extra workouts for me. She sets up open gyms during the viewing periods with other prep schools, and is constantly supporting her players with whatever they need.

JL: Talk about your experience playing with the Rivals, playing for Coach Hazelton and how that helped with your recruitment and development as a player.
AC: Going to the Rivals is what took my game to the next level. I was part of Coach Hazelton’s first girls elite team three years ago and there was only 12 of us and practices were intense and competitive. After my first year with Coach Hazelton I reclassified and was able to play for him for two more years. Coach Hazelton was always available for extra workouts one-on-one with me as well. He always pushed me to be better and make the right decisions. I have learned a lot from him, he helped me develop my game instincts as well as improving my skills. He is also a great advocate for all of his players. He is very proactive in promoting his players and teams with college coaches and making sure we are in the right places and events. Every time our team is on the court we have tons of coaches watching.

JL: What do you plan on studying at Manhattan?
AC: I am planning on a strong science program - pre med track. They have a great science program.

"I'm very excited for Kerry in her commitment to Curry College" said Windham High girls basketball head coach Joe Mason. "I think she will do very well if she continue to do the little things. It's been a pleasure to work with Kerry over the past 2 years. I have seen her grow both on and off the court. She is constantly working to improve herself personally, athletically and academically. She is wonderful person who cares about her teammates and coaches. She approaches every challenge with a positive attitude and never gives up when things get difficult. She leads by example. Kerry has been a great role model for the student-athletes in our basketball program. She has helped set a standard which all current and future Jaguar players will be judged. She has always put the team first and believed in our team motto Play as One."

White is a 5'10" power forward who can score and score at will in the paint. She also has the versatility to step away from the basket, face up and put the ball on the floor or hit jumper from 15-18 feet away as well as the occasional three-pointer. She has a good feel for the game and always plays hard.

"Kerry is a great kid who has excellent size and frame" said Kara Leary, who was White's AAU coach for the past 2 years with the NE Crusaders. "She continues to evolve her wing skills and will do fantastic at Curry. I think she does a lot of things well and she will continue to grow her game in college."

The Curry women's basketball team is coached by Fran Elms, who just completed his 9th season with the program. One of the 8 freshman on the team this year was former Bishop Guertin all-state forward Jenny Fallon. Here is what Kerry had to say when we interviewed her following her commitment.

Jeremy Leveille: Talk about your decision to commit to Curry.
Kerry White: Some other schools I was considering were Southern New Hampshire, Merrimack, and Plymouth State. There were many factors that led me to choose Curry such as its location and the coaches. I love how Curry is so close to Boston. I also love how small of a campus it is. I definitely got ‘the feel’ when I went to Curry. It’s a unique story because Curry College came out of the blue. Coach Elms came the Nashua Holiday Tournament and noticed me warming up for the championship game against Bedford and stayed for the whole game. He basically pursued me from there.I never even heard of Curry College. I pushed it aside at first. But I really liked how he kept calling me and thought I would be a tremendous fit at Curry. He said he could see me playing from the start, which was what I wanted.What impressed me and made me feel wanted was when Coach Elms came to my senior night game with some of the girls on the Curry team. He sat with my family the entire game too. That said a lot.

JL: Thoughts on joining a Curry team that is young and has the entire roster returning next year?
KW: I’m beyond excited to join such an up-and-coming team. When I saw the girls’ team play one weekend, I definitely wanted to play at that very moment! The few that I met were extremely nice and energetic. I’m excited to play with different girls on a higher level and in a different environment. I’m not worried about playing time when I get to Curry. I can’t be worried, or else I will drive myself crazy. I’m just going to work hard like I always do and whatever happens, will happen.

JL: What ahs it been like playing for a Windham girls basketball team that has had such a great 2 year run?
KW: The past two years at Windham have been so much fun. I knew we would have a chance at having a good season because Windham is a town full of athletic girls. But I honestly never expected my team to be that good. It helped being with such an amazing group. We all got along and had great chemistry. We genuinely liked being with each other. Also, the coaching staff was great. Coach Joe, Coach Man, Coach Haky, and Coach Erin were so helpful, encouraging, and wanted the best for all of us.

JL: How have Coach Mason and Coach Leary helped you over the past couple years?
KW: I’ve never had a coach like Coach Joe. He is very easy to talk to. He also cares about each girl on the team. He is so supportive and takes an interest in our lives outside of basketball. He has taught me that doing the little things make big things happen. He knows what to say and how to motivate me to make me want to try harder. Kara Leary is one of my favorite coaches ever. She knows so much about the game and has so many connections. She has really taught and helped me a lot. I am truly grateful for all of the opportunities she and the Crusaders program have given me.Also, I am also lucky to have met Coach Fagula (Londonderry High School) in 7th grade because he was the one who suggested joining the Crusaders.I have played against the best competition over the years and it has opened up my eyes on how intense the competition really is all over the nation. I am also grateful for my other Crusader coaches, Jenn Fay, Ian Horseman, Kindyll Dorsey, and Don Maynard because they have prepared me for the next level just as much as Kara.

JL: What do you see your role being on the team at Curry?
KW: On the team at Curry, I am going to do whatever coach Elms asks me to do.

JL: Favorite memories from playing at Windham and also for the Crusaders?
KW: Winning the Nashua Holiday Tournament and making it to quarterfinals and semifinals are definitely the most memorable and proudest moments in my career. Individually, I’m really proud that I made 1st Team All-State. It’s a great accomplishment.With the Crusaders, my most memorable moments would have to be playing in Chicago, Illinois and Nike Nationals in Augusta, Georgia. They were both fun experiences.

JL: What do you plan on studying at Curry?
KW: I hope to study either Education or Business.
