The boundaries of Gloucester originally included the town of Rockport, in an area dubbed "Sandy Bay." That village separated formally on February 27, 1840. In 1873, Gloucester was reincorporated as a city. Gloucester was founded at Cape Ann by an expedition called the "The Dorchester Company," of men from Dorchester, England, chartered by James I in 1623. This date allows Gloucester to boast the first settlement in what would become the Massachusetts Bay Colony, as this town's first settlement predates both Salem, MA in 1626, and Boston in 1630. This first company of pioneers made landing at Half Moon Beach, and settled nearby, setting up fishing stages in a field in what is now Stage Fort Park. This settlement's existence is proclaimed today by a memorial tablet, afixed to a 50' boulder in that park.

Two Final Shows of Riverdance at Boston Opera House on Sunday, April 15
04/19/2012

Boston audiences are giving Riverdance a final last hurrah this weekend, as the hit revue of Irish dancing and music makes its final Boston appearance at the Boston Opera House on Sunday, April 15, 2012.

On opening night Friday, the troupe received numerous encores and standing ovations, recognizing that Riverdance is finalizing its American performances with this current tour.

The show, which has been seen live by over 22 million people, has always been a favorite of the Irish community in Boston and the New England region.

In fact, several local dancers and musicians have starred in Riverdance from the area, including World Champion Irish dancers Liam Harney from Walpole and Scott Doherty from Lawrence, and All Ireland accordion play Sean Gannon from Dorchester.

The final two performances of Riverdance take place on Sunday, April 15, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. For ticket information click here.
