Charleston is the capital of West Virginia, a state of the United States of America. It is located at the confluence of the Elk and Kanawha Rivers in Kanawha County. As of the 2000 census, it has a population of 53,421. And the 2005 Census Estimate has Charleston with a population of 51,176, and a metro area of 307,763. Currently, Charleston is the largest city in the state. It is the county seat of Kanawha County. Early industry important to Charleston included salt and the first natural gas well.[1] Later, coal became central to economic prosperity in the city and the surrounding area. The first permanent settlement, Ft. Lee, was built in 1788. In 1791, Daniel Boone was a member of the Kanawha County Assembly. Charleston is the home of the West Virginia Power minor league baseball team, the West Virginia Wild minor league basketball team, and the annual 15-mile Charleston Distance Run. Yeager Airport and the University of Charleston are also located in the city.

Nitro West Virginia - Population: 6,824

Nitro is a city in West Virginia, along the Kanawha River. Most of the city lies in Kanawha County, with the remainder in Putnam County. The population was 6,824 at the 2000 census. Nitro was incorporated in 1932 by Circuit Court. Its name was selected by the United States government because of the establishment there during World War I of a large federal plant for the manufacture of explosives. This colorful history of Nitro culminated in several Superfund-funded cleanups of the ensuing mess. Major League Baseball player Lew Burdette was born in Nitro in 1926. Singer Kathy Mattea was raised in nearby Cross Lanes and graduated from Nitro High School in the Kanawha County portion of the city. Nitro's current mayor is Rusty Casto. It is also home to high school football record breaker and current AAA Houston Astro prospect J.R. House.
