Madison is the capital of Wisconsin, a state in the United States of America. It is the county seat of Dane County. Madison is also home to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. As of a 2005 census projection, Madison had a population of 221,551, making it the second largest city in Wisconsin, after Milwaukee, and the 85th largest in the United States. Counting the city's immediate suburbs, the area population exceeds 350,000. The city forms the core of the United States Census Bureau's Madison Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Dane County and neighboring Iowa and Columbia counties, had a 2000 census population of 501,774, and is one of the fastest-growing in Wisconsin.

The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city the population was spread out with 23.9% under the age of 18, 12.5% from 18 to 24, 37.2% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 5.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 107.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 107.0 males.

As of the census of 2000, there were 8,018 people, 3,768 households, and 2,053 families residing in the city. The population density was 921.4/km² (2,387.5/mi²). There were 3,922 housing units at an average density of 450.7/km² (1,167.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.70% White, 2.31% African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.84% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.31% from other races, and 1.47% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.19% of the population.
There were 3,768 households out of which 23.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.3% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 45.5% were non-families. 37.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.12 and the average family size was 2.80.
