Denton was founded in 1856 because of the need for a county seat. Denton, as well as Denton County, was named after John B. Denton, a prominent Methodist lawyer and Native-American fighter. The city was ultimately incorporated in 1866, when J.B. Sawyer was elected the first mayor. The current mayor of Denton, as of 2006, is Perry McNeill.

Lewisville Texas - Population: 77,737
Lewisville is a city in Denton County and Dallas County, Texas (USA). As of the 2000 census the city had a total population of 77,737. With strong population growth continuing into the new millennium, the city's official web page gives a 2006 population estimate of 89,000. Lewisville is one of the older incorporated cities (incorporated in 1925) in the northern area of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, but it remained a small rural town with just a few thousand people as late as 1960.The earliest white settlement in what is now Lewisville occurred in the 1840s. Basdeal Lewis purchased the land around which Lewisville would be formed and named the town after himself.Lewisville's growth is due in part to its proximity to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, a few miles to the city's south. Lewisville served for a time as the corporate headquarters for food distributor Fleming Foods, before the company ran into financial problems and relocated.

McKinney Texas - Population: 54,369
McKinney is a city in Collin County, Texas (USA). As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 54,369, while the 2006 population estimate is approximately 170,000. It is the county seat of Collin CountyGR6 and is a northern suburb of Dallas. According to the census, McKinney was the fastest growing city in the United States from 2000 to 2003 among cities larger than 50,000 people. This is due to the fact that McKinney is currently at the northeastern edge of the development in the fast growing suburbs north of Dallas. With the amount of land available within the city limits, McKinney will likely reach an ultimate population of over 350,000. The city was named after Collin McKinney (for whom the county is also named), a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, and a congressman for the Red River district of the Republic of Texas.

Flower Mound Texas - Population: 50,702
Flower Mound is a city in Denton County, Texas (USA). As of the 2000 census, the city population was 50,702, although more recent studies show the numbers to be closer to 70,000. The name comes from a large mound located in the southern portion of the city. Though surrounded by commercial and residential development, the mound, believed to be a Native American burial ground, is privately owned so as to be protected from further development.
Flower Mound has a small-town vibe with easy access to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. It refuses to be referred to as a "city" despite its recent growth; it bills itself as the "Town of Flower Mound" with a "Town Hall" and a "Town Council". The city is home to the headquarters of Time Warner Cable's South/Southwest Division (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida) which employs over 1,400 people and provides services to over 530,000.

Frisco Texas - Population: 33,714
When the Dallas area was being settled by European immigrants, many of the settlers traveled by wagon trains along the old Shawnee Trail. This trail was also used for cattle drives north from Austin. This trail later became the Preston Trail, and later, Preston Road. With all of this activity, the community of Lebanon was founded along this trail and granted a U.S. post office in 1860. In 1902, a line of the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway was being built through the area, and periodic watering holes were needed along the rails for the steam engines. The current settlement of Lebanon was on the Preston Ridge and was thus too high in elevation, so the watering hole was placed about four miles to the west on lower ground. A community grew around this train stop. Residents of Lebanon actually moved their houses to the new community on logs. The new town was originally named Emerson, but that name was rejected by the U.S. Postal Service as being too similar to another town in Texas.

Keller Texas - Population: 27,345
The Texas and Pacific Railroad between Fort Worth and Texarkana was completed in April 1881, and the first train ran on this track on May 9, 1881. With the advent of rail service, new villages were established all along the line. The Keller of today was one of them.
On July 19, 1881, H.W. Wood, a druggist of Tarrant County, set aside 40 acres out of the north end of the 62 acres deeded to him by A.C. Roberts (being a part of the Samuel Needham Survey) for a town site to be known as Athol, situated 14 miles northeast of Fort Worth. The land was dedicated to the public for street and alleyways, but title to the remainder of the 62 acres was held by Mr. Wood.
Settlers migrated to the new village, and before a year had passed the name of the town was changed from Athol to Keller, honoring John C. Keller, a foreman on the railroad.

The Colony Texas - Population: 26,531
The site of The Colony is located inside the original Peters Colony lands, on the site of the Hedgcoxe War.
The city of The Colony did not exist before 1969, when home developers Fox and Jacobs (owned by Centex) purchased most of the land located around State Highway 121 and Farm-to-Market Road 423. They planned the development of a new "dream city" modeled after the city of Dallas, consisting primarily of single family homes grouped as a "colony". The homes were served by a municipal utility district formed to bring water, electricity (via Texas Power and Light), cable television (via Lakeside CATV) and telephone service (via Southwestern Bell).
In 1976, one of the original homeowners associations petitioned the city of Frisco, Texas to remove the area from its extra-territorial jurisdiction.

Highland Village Texas - Population: 12,173
Highland Village incorporated as a city in the early 1960s, though it only registered 516 residents in the 1970 census. The opening of the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport helped spur massive growth in cities north of the airport, including Highland Village. The census figures rose sharply: 3,246 in 1980, 7,027 in 1990, 12,173 in 2000, and 14,589 in 2004 (estimated). The city remains a primarily residential area, though more business development is occurring. Rapid growth has led to political conflict, although the city is still relatively small compared to nearby Flower Mound and Lewisville.
Highland Village has been the site of a number of local controversies, including the extension of FM2499 to FM2181 in Corinth, Texas—long planned by TxDOT—and approval of development of one parcel within the city's retail district which will include a Wal-Mart as the anchor tenant.
