The city of Gresham could not establish itself as a city unless given a post office and postal code. General Walter Quinton Gresham, haven been appointed to the office of Postmaster General under President Chester A. Arthur would not grant the city either unless it was agreed to name the city after him. Although a post office was established in May, 1884, Gresham was not incorporated as a city until 1905. Lewis Shattuck, son of a pioneer family, was the first mayor. Since 1981, Gresham has been the home of the Mount Hood Jazz Festival, an annual festival of jazz musicians. The oldest of the city's four high schools is Gresham High School, home of The Gophers. This mascot was narrowly chosen in a vote by the student body over "The Berry Pickers", reflecting the city's rural origins.

Like many towns in the Willamette Valley, Tigard was originally settled by several families, the most noteworthy of which was the Tigard family, headed by Wilson M. Tigard. Arriving in the area known as "East Butte" in 1852, the family settled and became involved in organizing and building the East Butte School, a general store (which starting in 1886 housed the area's post office) and a meeting hall, and renamed East Butte to "Tigardville". The Evangelical organization built the Emanuel Evangelical Church at the foot of Bull Mountain, south of the Tigard store in 1886. A blacksmith shop was opened in the 1890s by John Gaarde across from the Tigard Store, and in 1896 a new E. Butte school was opened to handle the growth the community was experiencing from an incoming wave of German settlers.

Oregon City is the first city in the United States incorporated west of the Rockies. It is the county seat of Clackamas County, Oregon. Tualatin (IPA: tu ? l? tn?) is a city that is a southwestern suburb of Portland, Oregon, United States. It is located south of Tigard in Washington County, one of three Oregon counties that contain the Portland Metropolitan Area. The name is taken from the Tualatin River, which flows along most of the city's northern boundary. According to Oregon Geographic Names, a post office with the spelling "Tualitin" was established November 5, 1869, and the spelling changed to "Tualatin" in 1915. In the 1880s, the settlement was sometimes called Bridgeport, probably because of the nearby bridge, one of the first built over the Tualatin River. The population was 22,791 at the 2000 census. The 2006 estimate is 25,650 residents.

Known as the Dogwood City of the West, it was founded in 1847 as a rival to upriver Oregon City by Lot Whitcomb, who named it for Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The population was 20,490 at the 2000 census. The city was incorporated in 1903 and is noted as the birthplace of the Bing cherry. It is more recently known as the home of Dark Horse Comics. Troutdale is a city in Multnomah County, Oregon, north of Gresham and east of Wood Village. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 13,777. Troutdale was incorporated in 1907. It was named after the country home of Captain John Harlow, a former sea captain from Maine, and a successful Portland businessman. According to an article in the Oregonian in 1959, he named his home Troutdale because it had a "small dale near his house where it had a fish pond which he stocked with trout."
