In 1795, Nehemiah Hubbard, Jr., an energetic and respected merchant from Middletown, Connecticut, purchased a plot of about 15,274 acres, known as Hubbard Township. After purchasing the Hubbard Township property, Nehemiah Hubbard made his first sale of land to Samuel Tylee, a surveyor in Connecticut, and engaged him as his agent in this new territory. Tylee and others then came to find and measure plots suitable for sale to early settlers. Until 1861 Hubbard remained a country-crossroads with relatively few houses or inhabitants; however, when the coal fields began to develop, the corners rapidly became a village. The increase in population was due for the most part to the emigration of people from Europe, people in search of the opportunity of a better way of life. By 1868 the village had attained the required population and it became an incorporated municipality.

In 1843, the name was shortened to simply 'Niles'.

Anti-Klan Riot of 1924 - The Ku Klux Klan was focused on Niles because of the Catholic population in the area. They had one march through town in May 1924, and then attempted another June 21of that same year. This march was met with great resistance, and had to be canceled due to violence.

Struthers Ohio - Population: 11,756
Struthers is a city in Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. The population was 12,036 at the 2000 census. Struthers is served by a branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. It is part of the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman, OH-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. With the steel industry booming in the early part of the 1900s, immigrants from throughout Europe flooded into Struthers. A village in 1902 when it was officially incorporated, Struthers quickly became a city in 1920. The steel industry allowed the city to flourish until 1977 when several area plants closed their doors for good. The city padded the loss of thousands of jobs by using its industrial infrastructure to lure non-steel making jobs, but population losses have continued throughout the start of the new century. An interesting fact about the city is that it’s the only city in the United States that does not have a cemetery within its limits.
