Buffalo lies at the eastern end of Lake Erie near the head of the Niagara River, which connects to Lake Ontario. European-Americans first settled there in the late-18th century. Growth was slow until the city became the western terminus of the Erie Canal some forty years later. By the turn of the next century, Buffalo was one of the country's leading cities, and by far its largest inland port.

Amherst New York - Population: 115,581
Amherst is a town in Erie County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 116,510. This represents an increase from the 1990 census figure of 111,711. The town is named for Jeffrey Amherst, a British Army officer of the colonial period who is famous for inventing biological warfare. The largest and most populous suburb of Buffalo, New York, the Town of Amherst encompasses most of the Village of Williamsville and the hamlets of Eggertsville, Getzville, Snyder, Swormville, and East Amherst. The town is in the northern part of the county and borders a small section of the Erie Canal. Amherst is home of the Amherst campus of the State University of New York at Buffalo, the graduate campus of Medaille College, a campus of Bryant and Stratton College, and Daemen College. Millard Filmore Suburban Hospital is located in the center of town on Maple Road.

East Aurora New York - Population: 6,673
East Aurora is a village in Erie County, New York, USA. The population was 6,673 at the 2000 census.
The Village of East Aurora lies in the eastern half of the Town of Aurora. It is southeast of Buffalo, New York.
The village was founded in 1804, and incorporated in 1874.
Former President of the United States Millard Fillmore lived in East Aurora with his wife Abigail from 1826 to 1830. The house he built there while practicing law in the beginning of his political career is currently maintained by the Aurora Historical Society. The 1825 structure is restored to that period and features some original Fillmore furniture of the era, as well as items from Fillmore’s presidential years.
The founder of the Roycroft Movement, Elbert Hubbard, also lived there during the turn of the nineteenth century. Hubbard and his wife died onboard the RMS Lusitania in 1915.
