Floral Park is an incorporated village in Nassau County, New York on Long Island. The population is 16,800. The village is at the western border of Nassau County, and is located in both the Town of Hempstead and the Town of North Hempstead. The neighborhood of Floral Park, Queens, home of the North Shore Towers, is adjacent to the village. In 1874 John Lewis Childs arrived in the area to work for C.L. Allen as a seed seller. After building his own seed and bulb business[5] and starting America's first seed catalog business, Childs bought a great deal of land in the area. To promote his own business and the local horticultural industry, Childs named the local streets after flowers and renamed the area Floral Park. The expansion of the Floral Park Post Office and nearby village businesses are attributed solely to the success of Childs' business.[6] When the local Post Office took the name Floral Park, the Long Island Rail Road followed suit by changing the name to Floral Park in 1888.

The central, flat, grassy part of Long Island was originally named "Hempstead Plains." In the 19th century various communities were started. One of them was called "Hempstead Branch," and finally, "Mineola."
Long Island was part of Henry Hudson's original claim in the name of the Dutch East India Company dating as far back as 1609. In the 18th century the Dutch and English settlers worked to clear farmland to start their life on the Hempstead Plains. Since the early 1980s, it experienced a tremendous commercial and residential boom. During the late 1960s, White Plains developed a site master plan for residential, commercial and mixed use development that effectivly called for the demolition of its entire Central Business District from the Bronx River Parkway to East to Mamamroneck Ave staring in 1967. By 1978, there was preparation for a massive urban renewal program that centered around the building of the County Courthouse in 1974, the Westchester One office building in 1975, and the Galleria Mall in 1978.
At the time, the Westchester One building was the largest office building between NYC and Albany, and west to Hartford.
Since the early 1960's, many major corporations formerly headquartered in New York City have relocated to White Plains and Westchester, forming what came to be called the "Miracle Mile of Westchester Ave."
