Albany is the capital of the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2000 census, it has a population of 95,658. It is the county seat of Albany County. The City of Albany lies 145 miles (233 km) north of and slightly east of New York City, and slightly to the south of the juncture of the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers. Albany has close ties with the cities of Troy, New York and Schenectady, New York, forming what is generally known as the [Capital District], which in turn makes up the bulk of the Albany-Troy-Schenectady-Saratoga Springs Metropolitan Statistical Area with a population of 825,875, making it the fourth largest urban area in New York State. Albany is built on the site of the Dutch Fort Orange, and its surrounding community of Beverwyck. The English acquired the site from the Dutch in 1664 and renamed it Albany, in honor of the Duke of Albany. A 1686 document issued by Thomas Dongan granted Albany an official charter.

Cohoes New York - Population: 15,521
The city is on land purchased from the local natives in 1630. The land was once part of the Rensselaerwyck manor.
In 1831, a dam was constructed on the Mohawk River above the city's waterfall. This provided power to make the community a leading textile center with the establishment in 1836 of the Harmony Manufacturing Company, later famous as Harmony Mills. Cohoes became a mill town and to an extent a company town. During the 1870s the mills were enormously profitable, a result of the Erie Canal that flows past them. Mill #3, at over 1000 feet long, has been considered the longest continuous textile mill in the country at the time, although some dispute that Lowell, Massachusetts, was in fact home to the longest mill. In 1848, Cohoes was incorporated as a village, and in 1869 chartered as a city.

Colonie New York - Population: 7,916
This area was once part of the Rensselaerwyck manor. The Town of Colonie was formed in 1895 from most of what remained of the former "Town of Watervliet," leaving only the City of Watervliet, New York. The original Town of Watervliet was the "mother of towns" in Albany County, and Colonie is its historical successor. In October 2006, the Town of Colonie was ranked the sixth safest place to live in a Morgan Quitno Publishing study of crime rates across the United States.
The central part of the town was once the location of the extensive Shaker community farms. Much of that land is now occupied by the Albany International Airport.

Hudson New York - Population: 7,524
The land was purchased from the natives by Dutch settlers in 1662 and was originally part of the Town of Claverack. Settled by New England whalers and merchants hailing primarily from Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, and Providence, Rhode Island, Hudson was chartered as a city in 1785. The self-described "Proprietors" laid out a city grid, and Hudson grew rapidly as an active port, and came within one vote of being named the capital of New York State. Hudson obtained a new charter in 1895.
Hudson became notorious as a center of gambling and prostitution in the late 19th and first half of the 20th century, as described in some detail in Bruce Edward Hall's book, Diamond Street. These rackets were broken up in 1951 after surprise raids of Hudson whorehouses by then-Attorney General Thomas Dewey netted, among other catches, several local policemen.
