This country has a long romantic relationship with guns: frontier spirit, hunting, my home is my castle, stand your ground - on and on. They are part of many people's life-long tradition. Me, I ave no interest in guns. They exist mostly for the purpose of killing some being. Now, years ago I tried plunking some beer cans with a .22. I've tried shooting clay pigeons with a shotgun along with my brothers-in-law and nephews, all delightful people, on the old family farm in Kansas. (I can't hit a tree, let alone a moving target.) But there may be 75-80,000 people at this convention and Missouri allows anyone with a permit to carry a concealed hand gun. And Mitt Romney is in town today to speak to them. Too scary.

So, Mrs. C and I are heading out of town for the weekend to the picturesque village of
Ste. Genevieve, an hour down river. I think it was the first French settlement west of the Mississippi. Plus which, Saturday is our anniversary. (Number 38, thank you.) I think I'll put off more of the lady ruggers till next week. Today is the home opening game for the defending baseball champions, our St. Louis Cardinals. Your faithful blogger will be there with, um, several lenses. Pix of that on Saturday and Ste. Gen by Sunday.

My "Missouri Civil Liberties Defense Act" is under attack!! The Senators who are Fillibustering the bill are out & out Lying and as you'll see in this short video, those who oppose it are using deception to support their position! Tell your Senator to help pass this bill and do what you can to get Senators Chappelle-Nadal and Justus to stop the Bare Faced, Out-n-Out LIES about this bill.

Unfortunately for Nieves, the bill he views as under attack is truly a waste of time and an attack on our constitution. In short, SB 676 would prohibit foreign laws from being used in Missouri and American courts. But guess what? The US constitution already has a prohibition on the usage of foreign laws in American courts. Not only that, but the legislation pushed by Nieves and his cohorts in other states such as Oklahoma, Tennessee, Florida, Louisiana, and Arizona are really just a nationally coordinated Islamaphobic attack.

Additionally, this sort of legislation has already been found to be unconstitutional in Oklahoma:

Appellants do not identify any actual problem the challenged amendment seeks to solve. Indeed, they admitted at the preliminary injunction hearing that they did not know of even a single instance where an Oklahoma court had applied Sharia law or used the legal precepts of other nations or cultures, let alone that such applications or uses had resulted in concrete problems in Oklahoma. See Awad, 754 F. Supp. 2d at 1308; Aplt. App. Vol. 1 at 67-68.

Given the lack of evidence of any concrete problem, any harm Appellants seek to remedy with the proposed amendment is speculative at best and cannot support a compelling interest.15 “To sacrifice First Amendment protections for so speculative a gain is not warranted . . . .” Columbia Broad. Sys., Inc. v. Democratic Nat’l Co., 412 U.S. 94, 127 (1973).

Instead of attacking the sensibilities of Missourians and wasting valuable time in Jefferson City pursuing unconstitutional legislation, Senator Nieves would be better served in focusing on the real issues at hand such as turning our economy around and creating jobs.

Just after leaving the gentle combat we've seen the last two days, I rounded a turn in Forest Park and found this. Since I was feeling, I parked at the edge of the field, put the big telephoto on my camera and just shot through the open window. Easy.

I did not know there was organized women's rugby. I've known a few men who play the sport. They usually put stickers on the backs of their cars that say things like "Give Blood - Play Rugby." Oh, and drink large quantities of beer, too.

Can't say what these women do after the match but they were fierce out on the pitch. The top photo looks like the blue team's sprinter is making a dash for the goal but is about to get flattened by a much bigger opponent.

It's been said that men should get more in touch with their feminine side. Evidently, the opposite is also true.

Might post some more of this on Friday but I've got some new Arch stuff for tomorrow.
