Chaska is a city in Carver County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 17,449 as of the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Carver County. As of 2005, there were 22,467 people and 8,194 households residing in the city. The population density was 1,640 people per square mile. In a national poll in 2007, Chaska was named the 8th best city in the United States. Then in 2009 it was named the 20th best city. Chaska's history reflects the influence of the Native American culture. The first inhabitants are believed to be the Mound Builders, whose ancient communities are marked by mounds in City Square. Although the Indian mounds located in Chaska City Square indicate the immediate area was inhabited years before 1769, that's the year Chaska's recorded history began. In 1776, Jonathan Carver explored the lands along the Minnesota River and chronicled his journeys. During this time, Jean-Baptiste Faribault established a trading post in Chaska.

The first settlers arrived in Long Lake in early spring, 1855. This early contact in Long Lake did not result in settlement but rather this group of Nova Scotians came down Watertown Road, walked to the lake, looked across the lake and settled on the north side of the lake in what is now Orono. The first permanent settlement was established in May of 1855 with the arrival of the Flemings and the George Knettles from Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. This first settlement was called Cumberland Town and consisted of a saw mill, general store and schoolhouse. The platted area Cumberland Addition can trace its roots to this early period. The Knettle's house became a favorite stop for travelers between 1855 and 1860 and is the location of the first public religious service in the community. The first post office was established in 1856, which was named Tamarack in recognition of the Tamarack swamps in the western part of the country.
