Royal Oak Michigan - Population: 60,062
Royal Oak was incorporated as a village in 1895, and as a city in 1921. The city's name originates from a tree located near the present day intersection of Crooks, Rochester, and Main that in 1819 reminded Territorial Governor Lewis Cass of the Royal Oak tree within which King Charles II of England hid to escape the Roundheads following the Battle of Worcester.
Notably, on November 14, 1991, Thomas McIlvane killed five people, including himself, with a Ruger .22 caliber rifle in Royal Oak's post office, which was one of a string of incidents across the United States in which current or recently fired postal workers attacked and killed co-workers en-masse, leading to the phrase "Going postal."

Oak Park Michigan - Population: 29,793
Oak Park officially became a city on October 30, 1945 when the state of Michigan accepted the city charter. Planned developments in the late 1950s resulted in Oak Park being named "America's Fastest Growing City" at one point. Major civic improvements in this period included the addition of an outdoor swimming pool and an ice rink in Major Park (now known as Shepherd Park, after former mayor David Shepherd, but long known informally as Oak Park Park).
Oak Park is home to six of the steel and ceramic houses built by the Lustron company in the early 1950s, which provided an inexpensive type of shelter for servicemen returning from World War II. They can be found on Oneida St., just North of 9 Mile road.
Oak Park grew into a quiet city of one-story houses, sidewalks, trees, and backyards. For many years it has had the feeling of a small town, even though it borders the city of Detroit and several of its larger suburbs.

Hamtramck Michigan - Population: 22,976
Hamtramck is a city in Wayne County of the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 22,976. Hamtramck is surrounded by the city of Detroit except for a small portion of the western border which touches the similarly surrounded city of Highland Park. Hamtramck is named for the soldier Jean Francois Hamtramck who was the first American commander of Fort Shelby, the fortification at Detroit. Hamtramck was originally settled by Eastern European immigrants, particularly Poles, who still make up a large proportion of the population. It is sometimes confused with Poletown, a traditional Polish neighborhood which lies mostly in the city of Detroit and includes a small part of Hamtramck. Over the past twenty years, a large number of immigrants from the Middle East (especially Yemen) and South Asia (especially Bangladesh) have moved to the city and dramatically changed the city's ethnic makeup.

Highland Park Michigan - Population: 16,746
Ford Motor Company closed the Highland Park plant in the late 1920s, and in the late decades of the 20th century the city's population and economy shared the same decline that Detroit experienced. They also share the same crime problem.
The city suffered from white flight after the 1967 Detroit 12th Street Riot. The loss of stability in the community and economic development, caused partly by crime, mismanagement, disinvestments and racism, contributed to the city becoming one of the the most crime ridden place in the United States by the mid-1980s. [citation needed]Devil's Night fires, which were a problem in Detroit, also destroyed many homes and buildings in Highland Park.
The town was exceptionally green until the 1970s when Dutch elm disease caused many old trees to be cut down.
In 2002 the city went bankrupt, and as of 2006, it is still in emergency financial management under the State of Michigan.

Lake Orion (pronounced OR-ee-un) is a village in Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 2,715 at the 2000 census. Lake Orion and the surrounding area is one of the largest and fastest growing suburban areas in Michigan, partially caused by the urban sprawl of Metro Detroit.
Lake Orion (or Orion Township) is home to Lake Orion High School, Bald Mountain State Park, Indianwood Golf and Country Club, Canterbury Village, The Scripps Mansion, and a General Motors manufacturing plant.
