Greenbelt was settled in 1937 as a public cooperative community ("an experiment in American socialism") in the New Deal Era. The concept was at the same time both eminently practical and idealistically utopian: the federal government would foster an "ideal" self-sufficient cooperative community that would also ease the pressing housing shortage near the nation's capital. Construction of the new town would also create jobs and thus help stimulate the national economic recovery following the Great Depression. Crofton is a census-designated place and planned community in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, United States. Established in 1964, Crofton recently held its 40th birthday celebration. Community life frequently revolves around Crofton Parkway, actually a scenic loop 3.5 miles long, tangentially touching the larger "triangle" made up of three nearby roads, which encloses the original Crofton community. Crofton Parkway is the scene of yearly parades, two of its three elementary schools, the Town Hall, Village Green, community events, Crofton Country Club, and walkers, joggers and bikers around the loop. The Crofton area now extends North from the triangle, including Crofton Park and the Village at Waugh Chapel, a large outdoor shopping mall. Laurel is an incorporated city in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States, located midway between Baltimore, Maryland and Washington, DC. Takoma Park was founded by Benjamin Franklin Gilbert in 1883 and incorporated in 1890. It was the first planned commuter suburb in the area, and also bore aspects of a spa and trolley park. For many years it was world headquarters of the Seventh-day Adventist denomination, which has a college and a hospital there. Since before the incorporation of Takoma Park in 1890, the Montgomery/Prince George's County boundary cut through the current city boundaries, but pursuant to a popular referendum, and subsequent approval by both counties' councils, and the Maryland General Assembly, in 1997 the county line was moved to include all of the city in Montgomery County, including some territory newly annexed to the city at the time. At one time an extension of Interstate 70, also known as the North Central Freeway, was proposed that would have cut the city in two. Sam Abbott and others campaigned to prevent this and were successful.

The city was named for its founder, Christopher Clark Hyatt. He purchased his first parcel of land in the area in March 1845. He thought the proximity to the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad tracks and the telegraph lines made the area a good site for a town, and the surrounding farmlands were soon subdivided into housing lots. The name Hyattsville was being used for the settlement by 1859. As a community Inside the Beltway, Hyattsville still enjoys easy access to Washington and Baltimore by the West Hyattsville and Prince George's Plaza stops on the Metro subway system's Green Line or by MARC commuter rail trains on the Camden Line in the neighboring town of Riverdale Park. The historic district of the city is home to a number of Victorian houses built in the late 1880s and Sears bungalows and Arts & Crafts houses built between the wars (late 1910s and early 1940s).
