The boundaries of Gloucester originally included the town of Rockport, in an area dubbed "Sandy Bay." That village separated formally on February 27, 1840. In 1873, Gloucester was reincorporated as a city. Gloucester was founded at Cape Ann by an expedition called the "The Dorchester Company," of men from Dorchester, England, chartered by James I in 1623. This date allows Gloucester to boast the first settlement in what would become the Massachusetts Bay Colony, as this town's first settlement predates both Salem, MA in 1626, and Boston in 1630. This first company of pioneers made landing at Half Moon Beach, and settled nearby, setting up fishing stages in a field in what is now Stage Fort Park. This settlement's existence is proclaimed today by a memorial tablet, afixed to a 50' boulder in that park.

Beverly Massachusetts - Population: 39,862
Originally part of Salem and the Naumkeag Territory, the area was first settled in 1626 by Roger Conant. But because of religious differences with Governor John Endicott, Beverly would be set off and officially incorporated in 1668, when it was named after an English bishop. Surviving from the settlement's early history is the Balch House, built about 1636, one of the two oldest wood-frame houses in the United States.
The first ship commissioned by the United States military (actually the US Army, as the US Navy did not yet exist), was the armed schooner Hannah. It was outfitted at Glover's Wharf, and first sailed from Beverly Harbor on September 2, 1775. For this reason Beverly describes itself as the "Birthplace of America's Navy" -- a claim disputed by other towns, including nearby Marblehead.

Middleton Massachusetts - Population: 9,347
Middleton is a town in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,744 at the 2000 census. Middleton was first settled in 1659 and was officially incorporated in 1728. Prior to 1728 it was considered a part of Salem, and contains territory previously within the limits of Andover, Boxford, and Topsfield.[1] The name Middleton is derived from its location mid way between the important early settlements of Salem and Andover. It was first settled by Bray Wilkins, who came from Salem with a large family, having purchased six hundred acres from Governor Bellingham. The town grew as a farming community, mostly due to its location on the Ipswich River, with homesteads of hundreds of acres. However, during the 1700s Middleton also contained a vital ironworks industry, located in the area of what is now Mill and Liberty streets.

Manchester-by-the-Sea Massachusetts - Population: 5,265
The town was founded as "Jeffery's Creek." The name of the town was officially changed in 1990 following a close town meeting vote and an act of the state legislature. Manchester-by-the-Sea (also called just Manchester) is a town on Cape Ann, in Essex County, Massachusetts, in the United States. As of the 2000 census, the town population was 5,228. One mile from the town center is Singing Beach, so named because the sand comprising the beach squeaks when walked upon (see Singing sand). This beach is quite popular during summer months in particular because it is easily accessible from Boston by a half-mile walk from the MBTA train station. Also located on this historic beach is the famous tourist attraction "Eaglehead" a rock composite that is infamous for rock climbing and other recreation activities. The local newspaper, the Manchester Cricket, is published weekly.
