Gardner, named after Col. Thomas Gardner, was first settled in 1764 and was officially incorporated as a town in 1785 after receiving land grants from the surrounding towns of Ashburnham, Westminster, Templeton, and Winchendon. Gardner was officially named a city in 1923. Gardner is known as the "Chair City" and furniture capital of New England due to its long history in furniture production. Gardner is located at 42°34'26?N, 71°59'27?W (42.573920, -71.990818)GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 59.6 km² (23.0 mi²). 57.5 km² (22.2 mi²) of it is land and 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²) of it (3.52%) is water.

Leominster Massachusetts - Population: 41,303

Before European settlement, various divisions of the Pennacook or Nipmuc tribes inhabited the area, with a settlement nearby called Nashua. Leominster was first settled in 1653 and was officially incorporated in 1740. Leominster is now known as "The Pioneer Plastics City" because of its thriving plastics industry from the early part of the twentieth century to present day. Leominster and Fitchburg are commonly known as the twin cities in the area because of their similar populations and shared history of industry, and also because they are on opposite sides of the Nashua River. The city is divided into a few "villages" such as French Hill, a large hill covered in planned blocks of "triple decker" apartment houses located from 1st Street to 12th Street. It is called French Hill because this is where the large immigrant French population took root. In the early 1900's, on Lincoln Terrace, the Italians moved in as a group and built up a semi-closed society which existed for many years.

Fitchburg Massachusetts - Population: 39,102

Fitchburg was first settled in 1730 and was officially incorporated in 1764. It is named for John Fitch, a settler. In 1748, Fitch and his family were abducted to Canada by Native Americans, but returned the next year. Fitchburg is situated on both the Nashua River and a railroad line. The original Fitchburg Railroad ran through the Hoosac Tunnel, linking Boston and Albany, New York. The tunnel was built using the Burleigh Rock Drill, designed and built in Fitchburg. Fitchburg was a 19th century industrial center. Originally operated by water power, large mills produced machines, tools, clothing, paper, and firearms. The city is noted for its architecture, particularly in the Victorian style, built at the height of its mill town prosperity. As one of two shire towns The Northern Worcester County Registry of Deeds, established in 1903, and the county jail on Water Street were two county facilities located in Fitchburg.

Athol Massachusetts - Population: 8,370

Athol is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 11,299 at the 2000 census. Originally called Pequoiag, the area was first settled by five families in September of 1735. When the township was incorporated in 1762, the name was changed to Athol. John Murray, one of the proprietors of the land, chose the name because the hills reminded him of his ancestral home of Blair Atholl, Scotland. Athol means “pleasant place.” Early residents subsisted on agriculture and hunting. By 1791, Athol had four gristmills, six sawmills, a fulling mill, and a shop with a trip hammer, all of which were operated by water power. The Athol Cotton Factory, built in 1811, was one of the first industries to serve a market beyond the local one. Through the 1800s, textile, leather, wood, and metal industries further expanded the market for goods produced in Athol.

US Census 1940 Records Now Available for Irish-Americans Doing Family History Research

The United States Census Bureau has released the 1940 records of the US Census, a genealogical treasure-trove for millions of Americans doing family history research.

The records, which were released on Monday, April 2, 2012, are available at the National Archives web site and are free to the public. This is the first time that US Census figures have been initially released digitally.

Locally, The Irish Ancestral Research Association (TIARA) in Massachusetts is working with the FamilySearch Research Project to create digital indexes of documents from 1940. And genealogy expert Michael Brophy is giving a lecture, The Irish in the 1940 Census: Chronicling the Great Depression into World War II, at the Irish Cultural Centre in Canton on Friday, April 6, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. To pre-register, contact the ICC Library Committee at library@irishculture.org.

Family history researchers can also purchase from Boston Irish Tourism Association the booklet, Finding Your Irish Roots in Massachusetts, which lists a variety of national, state and local resources for discovering shipping records, birth, marriage and death vital statistics, plus cemeteries, local historical societies and more. The booklet comes with a free pen from Ordnance Survey Ireland, the government agency in charge of geographic data and maps dating back centuries. The cost of $4.95 includes postage and handling.

The Irish Ceilidhe Club of Rhode Island was formed in 1956 by Irish immigrants who wanted to preserve and perpetuate Irish traditional music, dance and culture in the area. Among the resident musicians and instructors at the Club are fiddle master Jimmy Devine and his daughter Hannah, singer Bridget Fitzgerald, flutist Andrea Cooper, and Ceili dance instructor Annie Hennessey. Irish dancer Kieran Jordan directs the dancing, with Connolly and friends providing live music. The performance is free and open to the public.

A ten-time All Ireland fiddle player, Connolly is regarded as one of the most prominent Irish musicians of his generation. The native of County Clare emigrated to the United States in the 1970s. In addition to his accomplishments as a musician, Connolly has also evolved as a scholar of traditional Irish music and an important collector of rare Irish and Celtic tunes played by musicians in Ireland, Canada and the United States.

But the very first parade on Monday, March 18, 1901 has a very different route,according to newspaper reports. It started in South Boston but ended up atFaneuil Hall in downtown Boston!

According to a map printed in the Boston Globe on March 17,1901, the Southie parade started at MarinePark on PleasureBay, where various military bands and regiments convened. It proceeded up East Broadway,turned onto G Street and marched around the Dorchester Heights Monument, then back out to E. Broadway. It headed onto West Broadway to the end of the road, before crossing the Broadway Bridge out of South Boston and into Boston.

There the procession turned right onto Washington Street, headed to Park Square, then down Charles Street, between the Public Gardenand Boston Common. Next it turned up Beacon Hill, passing the State House, down past the Parker House onto School Street. At the bottom of School - where the Boston Irish Famine Memorial is now - it turned left onto Washington Street,before heading to Dock Square, where Boston City Hall is today, next to Faneuil Hall.

The parade was approximately 4.8 miles, and started at 2:00 p.m.

After the parade, the South Boston Citizens Association held its banquet at Gray's Hall in South Boston, where patriotic speeches were made well into the night.
