Once, the only people to stroll Naples' seven miles of white, sandy beaches, were the Calusa Native Americans. The first settlers, Roger Gordon and Joe Wiggins, arrived in Naples in the late 1860's. A river and two inlets still bear their names. Throughout the 1870's and '80's, magazine and newspaper stories telling of the area's mild climate and abundant fish and game likened it to the sunny Italian peninsula. The name Naples caught on when promoters described the bay as "surpassing the bay in Naples, Italy." In 1887, a group of wealthy Kentuckians, led by Walter N. Haldeman, owner of the Louisville Courier-Journal, purchased virtually the entire town of Naples. One of the first improvements Haldeman and his Naples Company made was to build a pier 600 feet into the Gulf of Mexico. The pier's "T" shape allowed large ships to dock easily. Despite being destroyed and rebuilt three times, the pier remains today.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 106.2 km² (41.0 mi²). 91.4 km² (35.3 mi²) of it is land and 14.8 km² (5.7 mi²) of it (13.95%) is water.
The city is located on both Estero Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The area referred to as Bonita Beach is located on a road-accessible barrier island (Little Hickory Island) that lies between the Gulf of Mexico and Estero Bay. The Imperial River flows through the downtown district of the city and empties into Estero Bay.

Golden Gate Florida - Population: 20,951
As of the census of 2000, there were 20,951 people, 6,518 households, and 5,012 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,002.3/km² (5,190.7/mi²). There were 7,010 housing units at an average density of 669.9/km² (1,736.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 77.00% White, 10.15% African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 7.34% from other races, and 4.31% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 37.14% of the population.
There were 6,518 households out of which 44.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.6% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.1% were non-families. 14.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 44.3 km² (17.1 mi²). 27.4 km² (10.6 mi²) of it is land and 16.9 km² (6.5 mi²) of it (38.13%) is water.
Marco Island is the largest and most northern of Florida's 10,000 islands. It has a mix of single family homes and high rise condominiums. The island was developed by the Deltona Corporation in the 1960s. Founded by the Mackle Family, Deltona gained national notoriety for Marco Island's success as a project. The Mackle Company was the largest homebuilder in the United States from 1958 through 1961. Although some of the homes on Marco Island are considered "inland" because they are not directly on the water, most single family homes are directly on a canal or waterway and have their own boat docks with boat lifts.

Naples Park Florida - Population: 6,741
As of the census of 2000, there were 6,741 people, 2,737 households, and 1,757 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,133.4/km² (5,541.4/mi²).
