The town was settled in 1874 by David M. Simpson, his wife and 2 children. In 1880, it was named "Royellou" by the postmaster, Ross Tremain, after his children Roy, Ella and Louis. In 1883, The Alexander House opened, a 2 story hotel with 10 rooms, and the community was renamed "Mount Dora." It took the name of Lake Dora, which had been named by surveyors in 1846 for Dora Ann Drawdy, who lived with her husband 2 miles south of Mount Dora. The arrival of the railroad in 1887 stimulated the economy, carrying tourists and freight. A popular winter retreat for hunting, fishing and boating, The Alexander House would be renamed The Lake House in 1893. Mount Dora was incorporated in 1910, with a railway depot built in 1915.

Deltona Florida - Population: 69,543
Deltona was laid out originally as a retirement community in 1963. Founded by the Mackle brothers who have a street reverse-named in their honor (Elkcam). Due to its proximity to downtown Orlando and its theme parks via I-4, the area grew very rapidly between 1970 and 2000 and Deltona has served as a bedroom community for commuters to Orlando ever since. It grew so fast that residents decided to incorporate it into an official city on 31 December 1995 after two previous attempts had failed in 1987 and 1990.

Sanford Florida - Population: 38,291
The Timucuan Indians once inhabited the shores of Lake Monroe, where the domain of Chief Utina extended to just north of Lake George. By 1760, however, war and disease had decimated the tribe, which would be replaced by the Seminole Indians. Florida was acquired by the United States from Spain in 1821, but the Seminole Wars would delay settlement. In 1835, the Indians burned the port of Palatka on the St. Johns River, then the major artery into Central Florida from the East Coast. Consequently, in 1836 General Andrew Jackson, the territory's provisional governor, had an army garrison established upstream on the southern side of Lake Monroe near a trading post. Called "Camp Monroe," the log breastwork was attacked on February 8, 1837. It would be strengthened and renamed "Fort Mellon" in honor of Captain Charles Mellon, the sole American casualty. General Zachary Taylor had a road built connecting a string of defenses from Lake Monroe to "Fort Brooke" (now Tampa).

De Bary Florida - Population: 15,559
The Timucuan Indians once lived in the vicinity of Lake Monroe, where the domain of Chief Utina extended to just north of Lake George. They hunted, fished and gathered plants and berries from the forest. By 1760, however, the Timucua had disappeared and been replaced by the Seminole tribe from Alabama and Georgia. Florida was acquired from Spain in 1821, but the Seminole Wars would delay settlement. In 1866, Elijah Watson of Enterprise sold land to Oliver and Amanda Arnett on the northern shore of the St. Johns River at Lake Monroe, where they built a house.
The couple in turn sold 400 acres in 1871 to (Samuel) Frederick deBary, a wealthy wine merchant from New York City, and that same year he erected a hunting lodge. Called "DeBary Hall," the 8,000 square foot, 20 room Italianate mansion featured a two-tiered veranda, stables, an ice-house and the state's first swimming pool, fed by a spring. Visitors included President Ulysses S. Grant and President Grover Cleveland.
