Jonesboro is a city in Craighead County, Arkansas, United States. According to 2006 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city is 59,358.[2] Jonesboro is the county seat, the largest city in northeast Arkansas, and the fifth most populous city in the state. It is the principal city of and is included in the Jonesboro, Arkansas Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Jonesboro metropolitan area had an estimated population of 151,485 in 2005.[3] Jonesboro is the home to Arkansas State University and is a regional center for manufacturing, agriculture, medicine, education, and trade. Jonesboro has over seventy-five churches, earning it the nickname "The City of Churches". It is also home to the Islamic Center of Jonesboro, which was built with funds provided by the government of Saudi Arabia. At the time of construction, the Islamic Center was one of the largest mosques in the southern United States. Currently, the mosque is operated by the Salafi sect of Islam.
